Mike, you are missing some rather basic differences.

SMTP defines the construct of 'client' explicitly.  SSP does not.

In addition, SMTP is a real-time exchange protocol and SSP is not. For that 
matter, SSP is a very unusual style of "protocol" and so the client-server 
construct does not have obvious application.  I don't mean it can't be applied 
but, as I said, the application isn't obvious.

In any event, I'm still not seeing how any of this relates to the original 
reference to an MUA.
